Matsyaganddhi is a one-act play written by Sajitha Madathil a well-known feminist and theatrical activist from Kerala. It narrates the story by depicting the difficulties faced by the fishing community. The title Matsyaganddhi is associated with Satyavathi, a character from the great epic the Mahabharata. She was a woman who evicted a fishy smell and was raised by a fisherman. Matsyaganddhi is a dramatic monologue which means it is a self conversation in which the speaker is never concerned about the audience and the speaker expresses his emotions through his words and it sets the mood of the play. This play unravels the miseries faced by the fishermen's community in this present world. They are facing many troubles of which the rest of the world may not be even aware. They have to fully sacrifice their lives in the sea to get their livelihood. They convert nights into days for the betterment of their family. Their lives are also at times becomes fishing nets which are broken or torn. They always carry the stinking smell of fish throughout their lives. Their fight never ends. They have to fight not only in the sea but also against fish buyers. Traditional fishermen still have to overcome the challenges that other fishermen create by using modern boats and fishing techniques. They have to tame the misfortunes in the sea and the miser buyers. The author mocks the society which is strangling women by its unwritten laws. She compels the character to rephrase the dialogue from the Malayalam movie 'Chemeen' that women should be chaste and faithful so that Kadalamma - sea mother will protect their husbands. Sajitha uses intensified language to show how modern developments have adversely affected the sea. She says trawler boats are tearing open the bosom of the sea. She also veils about the fishes slaughtered by trawler nets. Even during the recent developments society is still trying to visualize women as perfect sculptures.
