Vaikom Muhammad Basheer is one of the most eminent writers in Malayalam. He is known for his style of writing which converse language with that soul of simplicity. Basheer actively participated in the national movement for freedom. Balyakalasakhi, Mathilukal, Shabdhangal, and Pathummayude Aadu are his other notable works.
The whole story revolves around two central characters Abdul Khader and Jamila. Abdul Khader was a trade union leader who worked under Jamila’s father. The introductory part of the story depicts Abdul Khader as a strong trade union leader who proposes Jamila with a tone of playfulness. He warns Jamila playfully that she has to love him back or else he will even physically attack her.
As the story continues Abdul khadar and Jamila continues to lead a happy married life. One day Jamila asked Abdul Khader to get two Poovanpazham. Abdul Kadar who had a deep love for his wife decided to go to the market to get it but unfortunately, he couldn’t find a banana anywhere in the market so he bought a dozen of Oranges. He had heavy rain and flood in the nearby river on his way back.
Basheer uses his descriptive style of writing to present the hardships faced by the hero. Abdul Khader became a real trade union leader by upholding his emotions and decided to fight against the ‘autocratic’ rain that hindered his journey back home.
Abdul Khader had a tough time reaching home when he reached the home he noticed that the back door was open and Jamila was sleeping on her bed. He thought that he will give her a pleasant surprise so he opened the back door and he stood close to Jamilah when she saw him she was surprised and asked him for Poovanpazham.
He told he didn’t get it but he brought some good oranges for her she was not happy so she said I don’t want any oranges and she looked like she’s no more interested to talk with Abdul Khader. Soon he became an old trade union leader and he brought back his rowdy nature.
He brought a knife and asked Jamila to eat it. Jamila had no option but to eat. This is the most beautiful scene in the story in which Basheer outlines the intimacy between his characters.
Readers can understand that they enjoyed “Poovanpazham” very much because the writer uses a different method to depict the emotional bond between the couples, they recollect these memories during their stay at old age home.
We can find the simplicity of Basheer’s language and the bond between these couples throughout the story. One of the best examples can be seen at the end of the story.
Abdul Khader and Jamila reflect on the memories he asked her what did I bring you when you asked me for poovanpazham then she replied you brought me poovanpazham but shaped like oranges. Basheer also used the beautiful symbol of flood to show the hardships in the life of Abdul Khader and Jamila.
Dilip Chitre’s Father returning home narrates the absence of strong bonds in the modern world.
