The chance of humming is a poem by Jalal ad-Din Muhammed Rumi(1207-1273). He was a Persian poet and an Islamic scholar from the thirteenth century. Rumi played a great role in forming modern Sufism. Sufism is described as a belief or practice through which an individual attains a direct and personal relationship with their God. Unlike other mystic poets of his time, he was more realistic. He propagated the need for self-empowerment in life. His poems are highly appreciated by philosophers of his time.
Jalaluddin Rumi picturizes love as a bridge between us and everything. He advocates for a universal brotherhood where people are strongly bonded with love irrespective of their caste, religion, and class.
This poem stays as a gentle reminder to the modern culture to find happiness in everyday activities. The writer requests his readers also to think about the difficult phases of life when one has to reflect and act upon them.
This poem reflects how suffering can force people, to rethink their current way of life. Rumi picturizes a man moving on two logs in a river. The poet believes that such a journey would be easy. But it would be hard if that man is tied to a camel and the camel decides to move in the other direction.
Poet warns about the misfortunes that can surround them anytime. He also advocates not being stuck with these misfortunes but to live the happy moments of life.
In the second stanza, the poet describes how unforeseen situations can bring struggles in life. He writes, ” unless the camel thinks he forgot something…” to indicate how dependable humans are to their circumstances.
Life seems to be easy when one moves towards the current. Robert Frost’s The Road not taken discusses the theme of the unpredictability of life.
The poet is also concerned about the people who live in the past and future. He suggests them to enjoy the present life. He is not proposing an epicurean Philosophy instead a life where simple things are enjoyed to the fullest. The poem itself is presented in the form of a river. A man standing on two logs in a river might do all right floating with the current while humming in the now. Though if one log is tied to a camel, who is also heading south along the bank – at the same pace all could still be well with the world
unless the camel thinks he forgot something, and abruptly turns upstream, then uh-oh. Most minds do not live in the present and can stick to a reasonable plan; most minds abruptly turn and undermine the chance of humming.
